Chinese zodiac order cat4/13/2024 Van Woerkom, in her The Rat, the Ox, and the Zodiac: A Chinese Legend. This Chinese folktale - which explains not only the order of the years, in the Chinese lunar calendar, but also the animosity between Rat and Cat - has also been retold by Dorothy O. And so begins "The Great Race," in which the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac compete for the honor of coming first, and in which clever Rat - though the smallest of the animals - has a plan. The winning animal's year will come first, and each subsequent racer's next, in the cycle of the years. But although he wants to name each year after an animal, he isn't sure what order he should use, in that naming, and decides to hold a great race. Realizing that his people have no calendar, and therefore no way to measure time, the Jade Emperor (and King of Heaven) decides to create one, using a twelve-year cycle.
